About Dr Nieman

Dr. Peter Nieman has been practicing as a specialist with children for 25 years and has been a pediatrician in Alberta since 1987. In addition to his medical experience, he is also a parent of four children. Dr. Nieman recognizes the challenges of raising healthy children.

Dr. Nieman obtained his undergraduate degree at Tygerberg Hospital in Capetown, South Africa in 1979. He moved to Calgary in 1983 and completed his residency at Alberta Children’s Hospital. In 1987, Dr. Nieman became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (Pediatrics).

Currently Dr Nieman practices in the Pediatric Weight Clinic in Calgary and also runs an ambulatory pediatric practice where he sees patients in consultation.

Dr. Nieman teaches as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Calgary and is a regular medical contributor to newspapers, radio and television broadcasts. He currently appears on CTV Calgary television and QR 77 radio.

He has written monthly columns on children’s health for the Calgary Herald since 1999.

Previously Dr. Nieman contributed weekly to the Globe and Mail, Canada’s National Newspaper, from 2010 to 2012.

Dr. Nieman is the President of the Alberta Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Currently he serves on the Canadian Medical Association’s Health Promotion Committee.

He served on the Canadian Pediatric Society’s Healthy Active Living Committee for 8 years. Dr. Nieman also served on the National Advisory Committee on Physical Activity and Healthy Active Living for Children and Youth and the Canadian Pediatric Society’s Psychosocial Committee.

He has been part of the Obesity Management and Prevention Committee of the Alberta Medical Association and sat on the Academic Advisory Board of the National Foundation for Family Research and Education.

Dr. Nieman served as President of the Canadian Christian Medical and Dental Society from 1998-2000.

Dr. Nieman runs marathons and has completed 81 marathons thus far, including 2 Boston Marathons.
